Fraction Calculator

Add, subtract, multiply or divide two fractions — integers and decimals work too. Every result is exact and fully reduced, with the classic steps: common denominators, reciprocals, cancelling down.

5/6

Integers, negatives, decimals or fractions (e.g. 3, -2, 1/2). Empty cells count as 0.

Step-by-step solution

  1. 1

    The expression

    Addition of two fractions.

    12+13\frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{3}
  2. 2

    Find a common denominator

    2 and 3 share no common factor, so the least common denominator is their product, 6.

    lcm⁡(2, 3)=6\operatorname{lcm}(2,\, 3) = 6
  3. 3

    Rewrite both fractions

    Extend each fraction so that both have the common denominator 6.

    12=1⋅32⋅3=3613=1⋅23⋅2=26\frac{1}{2} = \frac{1 \cdot 3}{2 \cdot 3} = \frac{3}{6} \\ \frac{1}{3} = \frac{1 \cdot 2}{3 \cdot 2} = \frac{2}{6}
  4. 4

    Add the numerators

    Keep the common denominator and add the numerators: 3 + 2 = 5.

    36+26=56\frac{3}{6} + \frac{2}{6} = \frac{5}{6}
  5. 5

    Reduce to lowest terms

    Numerator and denominator share no common factor, so the fraction is already in lowest terms.

    gcd⁡(5,6)=1\gcd(5, 6) = 1
  6. 6

    Result

    1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6

    12+13=56\frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{3} = \frac{5}{6}

About fraction arithmetic

A fraction num/den represents an exact rational number. Every fraction here is normalized: reduced by the gcd of numerator and denominator, with a positive denominator.

Addition and subtraction need a common denominator, multiplication is numerator × numerator over denominator × denominator, and division multiplies by the reciprocal of the divisor.

Decimals like 0.1 cannot be represented exactly in binary floating point, so this calculator converts every input to BigInt fractions first: 1/2 + 1/3 is exactly 5/6 and 0.1 + 0.2 is exactly 0.3.
